In Senegal, prominent columnist Badara Gadiaga was placed in custody on Monday amid a series of legal charges stemming from his public commentary.
Gadiaga is facing accusations of spreading false news, making immoral statements, and insulting a public official performing presidential duties. He is also charged with soliciting or receiving unauthorized funds.
The charges partly relate to remarks he made concerning Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s 2023 conviction in the widely publicized Adji Sarr case.
Gadiaga’s legal team, led by Oumar Youm, has raised concerns over procedural irregularities and announced plans to pursue international legal action against the Senegalese government.
