Senegal’s navy has rescued 201 would-be migrants attempting a dangerous Mediterranean crossing aboard makeshift boats near the Saloum archipelago, off the coast of Fatick.
The interception occurred during a maritime surveillance operation conducted between July 8 and 9, 2025, aimed at curbing illegal immigration. Authorities say several women and children were among those rescued.
Following the operation, the rescued individuals were handed over to the gendarmerie and social welfare services for further care and screening.
Investigations are currently underway to determine their nationalities and dismantle the smuggling networks facilitating such perilous journeys.
