Burkina Faso’s transitional government has approved the creation of four new regions and two new provinces, increasing the total to 17 regions and 47 provinces.

The announcement was made following the adoption of two decrees during a Council of Ministers meeting on July 2, 2025. Officials say the restructuring is intended to improve administrative efficiency, especially in areas impacted by security challenges.

The new administrative areas will also bear names in national languages, reflecting a renewed push for cultural recognition and inclusivity.

Authorities believe the reorganization will enhance public service delivery and strengthen state presence in underserved parts of the country.
