A recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that more than 4.8 million Ghanaians reside in urban slums, where access to basic services such as clean water, decent housing, and sanitation is severely limited.
The “Slums and Informal Settlements Thematic Report,” based on the 2021 Population and Housing Census, sheds light on deepening inequality and deteriorating conditions in Ghana’s urban centres.
The findings highlight that despite rapid urbanization, infrastructure and social services have not kept pace, leaving millions trapped in poverty.
The GSS calls for urgent policy action to improve urban planning, invest in inclusive housing, and narrow the development gap in cities.
