In Guinea, a fresh wave of political tension is brewing following the government’s decision to establish a new election management body. The General Directorate of Elections (DGE), created by presidential decree over the weekend, has replaced the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI).

The transitional government says the DGE will oversee the constitutional referendum and organize future elections. However, its placement under the Ministry of Territorial Administration has sparked backlash from opposition groups. Critics argue that the new body lacks independence and is a strategic move to prolong military rule.

As Guinea prepares for its long-awaited return to civilian leadership, the legitimacy of the electoral process remains a central concern.
