The Ghanaian government has announced a suspension of the much-debated GH₵1 per litre fuel levy, originally set to take effect on June 16, 2025. The decision follows a sharp spike in global oil prices triggered by escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the move comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders and reflects the government’s intent to ease economic pressure on citizens and maintain currency stability. The levy, introduced under the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, was expected to generate about GH₵5.7 billion annually to clear energy sector debts.

The Ghana Revenue Authority also backed the delay, citing the need for enhanced technical and operational preparedness. The Energy Ministry emphasized that a new date for implementation would be announced soon.

President Mahama, during his tour of the Savannah Region, reiterated his commitment to safeguarding recent gains in fuel price reductions and instructed ministries to act in the public’s interest.
