Liberia has secured a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, representing Africa alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2026 to 2027. The country contested unopposed and received 181 votes during the election.
While the international win is being celebrated by government officials, the reaction at home has been mixed. Several civil society organizations (CSOs) are raising red flags over Liberia’s internal governance record.
Concerns include allegations of power misuse, lack of transparency, and inequitable justice under President Joseph Boakai’s leadership. Critics argue that international representation must go hand-in-hand with domestic reforms.
Anderson Miamen, Executive Director of the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), emphasized the need for stronger governance to match the country’s global responsibilities.
