The Norwegian Refugee Council’s 2024 index on the world’s most neglected displacement crises places Cameroon at the top, followed closely by Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, and Mali.
Despite climbing four spots in the latest ranking, Burkina Faso continues to struggle, with displacement significantly affecting access to education, particularly in rural areas. Over two million people remain internally displaced.
Anne Trehondart, Regional Program Director at the NRC, says the root causes include declining humanitarian funding, weak international media coverage, and a lack of strong political engagement to resolve conflicts.
She called for urgent attention to neglected crises, stressing that without renewed commitment, millions will remain invisible and underserved across Africa’s conflict-affected regions.
