The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has taken a bold step to address illegal street begging in Accra by repatriating 2,241 undocumented foreign nationals. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, was intelligence-led and focused on known hotspots such as Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and Obetsebi Roundabout.
Among those apprehended were 909 adults and 1,332 children, with 961 males and 1,280 females in total. The GIS emphasized that the suspects are undergoing security and medical screening at the National Headquarters in Accra to ensure humane and professional handling.
This action is part of a broader effort to dismantle criminal networks facilitating illegal operations and to uphold law and order in the capital city. The Service reaffirmed its commitment to human rights, assuring the public that all processes will respect the dignity of those involved.
