In Togo, civil society groups are criticizing the government’s recent decision to raise electricity tariffs by 12.5%, excluding taxes.

The hike, which took effect on May 5, has sparked concern among residents already grappling with a rising cost of living.

Togo’s Consumer League (LCT) strongly condemned the measure, citing a lack of consultation and warning of severe social impacts.

The group urged the government to reconsider, describing the increase as unfair and economically burdensome for many households.
