At least 48 people, including pregnant women, have died after an illegal gold mine collapsed in western Mali. Several women were among those trapped beneath the rubble while searching for gold fragments. This marks the second deadliest mining disaster in recent years, following a similar collapse in Kangaba, near the capital Bamako, over a year ago.
