Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister-designate, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to bringing Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger back into ECOWAS. He pledged to work closely with special envoy Colonel Larry Gbevlo-Lartey to achieve this goal.

Speaking at his vetting before the appointment committee, Ablakwa emphasized the importance of regional peace, economic integration, and prosperity. He stressed that Ghana remains dedicated to strengthening West African unity.

The three nations exited ECOWAS on January 29, citing various infractions after a yearlong notice. Their departure has raised concerns about regional stability and cooperation.

Ablakwa assured that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration will actively pursue diplomatic efforts to reintegrate the AES states and restore their role in the regional bloc.
