The Malian government has taken a decisive step to enhance the nation’s electoral process by approving a project to amend the 2022 electoral law. During a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday, the Minister of Territorial Administration presented the reform, emphasizing its focus on improving voter registration and ensuring more inclusive and transparent elections. One of the key changes includes extending the annual revision period for electoral lists beyond the current October to December timeline, providing greater flexibility for voters.

The reform also targets significant modifications to articles 52, 57, and 70 of Law No. 2022-019 of June 24, 2022. These changes aim to optimize the management and updating of electoral registers, broaden access to voter registration, and ensure the process accommodates more citizens. A particularly noteworthy provision allows registration using alternative documents, such as enrollment receipts or descriptive sheets, making it easier for individuals not yet registered in the national biometric database, including those from the Administrative Census for Civil Status purposes, to participate.

This initiative reflects Mali’s commitment to fostering an inclusive democratic process. By addressing existing challenges and simplifying registration conditions, the reform seeks to ensure that more citizens can exercise their voting rights, strengthening the legitimacy of future elections.
