The Chinese oil company CNPC in charge of exploiting the Agadem oil market, through its subsidiary Wapco, has announced the suspension of its operations for security reasons, adding that site employees will be on leave until the security situation improves.
The Agadem oil site in Niger, as well as the pipeline transporting oil from this site to Benin, have been attacked several times by armed men.
CNPC indicated that since June 12, terrorist groups have carried out targeted attacks on oil projects, and since then, the security situation at the site has deteriorated.
To recall, six soldiers in charge of monitoring a pipeline transporting oil from Agadem to Benin were killed in an attack on June 12 in the Dosso region near Benin.
