Human rights activists and victims of the Yahya Jammeh regime in the Gambia,  have praised the National Assembly for the bills passed on Monday

They are the Special Prosecutor’s Office Bill 2024 and the Accountability Mechanism Bill which seeks a comprehensive framework for prosecuting individuals implicated in serious human rights violations identified by the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission TRRC from 1994 to 2017.

On the other hand, the Special Prosecutor’s Office Bill aims to establish the office of the Prosecutor who shall be tasked with investigating and prosecuting cases involving serious human rights violations during Jammeh’s era.

The bills were welcomed and supported by a majority of the parliamentarians who highlighted their importance in the quest for providing justice.

However, Baba Hydara, a publisher whose father was killed during Jammeh’s regime believes the struggle is so far commendable but fears the walk to justice remains.
