The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union (EU) have urged Senegalese authorities to hold elections “as soon as possible” following the indefinite postponement of the presidential election in Senegal.
The French Ministry called for the removal of uncertainties surrounding the electoral calendar, emphasizing adherence to Senegalese democratic rules.
The EU supported the position of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and called on all stakeholders to work towards a transparent, inclusive, and credible election, preserving Senegal’s tradition of stability and democracy.
Senegalese President Macky Sall cited a conflict between the National Assembly and the Constitutional Council as the reason for the postponement and affirmed his commitment to not run in the election while initiating a national dialogue for a peaceful and inclusive process
