In Chad, five army generals accused of attempting to bribe an investigating judge appeared in court on November 5.

The closed-door trial took place at the Klessoum detention centre near N’Djamena, where the officers have been held since late September.

They are accused of offering 100 million CFA francs to secure the release of Mahamat Massar Houd, a former treasurer in Abéché, who is facing charges of embezzling more than six billion CFA francs.

Among the accused generals is reportedly Houd’s father.

During the hearing, defense lawyers requested a confrontation with the judge, while the prosecution argued that the N’Djamena High Court had no jurisdiction in the case.

A verdict is expected on November 12.
