The World Health Organization WHO says globally, the prevalence of Parkinson disease (PD) has doubled in the past 25 years with global estimates in 2019 showing over 8.5 million individuals living with the disease.
PD is a degenerative condition of the brain associated with motor symptoms and a wide variety of non-motor complications such as cognitive impairment, mental health disorders, pain and other sensory disturbances.
Since 2000, WHO has documented over three hundred and twenty thousand deaths from the disease, which raises concern about the prevention, treatment and care especially in middle- and low-income countries.
This revelation by the WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Tuesday, comes amid the ongoing fight against the covid19 pandemic, increasing number of hepatitis infection in children and the monkey outbreak.
