In this new year’s edition of the programme, we are drawing your attention to a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event like rape, chronic illness, death, and domestic abuse, among others.

This is known as post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.

While most victims don’t admit to falling into this state, noticeable symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

These symptoms may start within one month of a traumatic event, but sometimes they may not appear until years after the event. The symptoms also vary over time or vary from person to person.

In West Africa, people start the year by fasting, either for religious purposes or to rid themselves of excess elements consumed during the festive season. Whichever is yours, this edition of the programme will give you insight into how to go about it without your vitals being affected.
