The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) has lauded ECOWAS for extending an invitation to Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to participate in the official launch of its 50th anniversary celebrations in Accra.
In a statement issued on April 22, 2025, WADEMOS described the move as a positive and timely gesture aimed at restoring regional unity and diplomatic ties. The Network noted that the inclusion of the three Sahelian countries – despite recent tensions and their temporary withdrawal from the regional bloc – reflects ECOWAS’ commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and regional integration.
WADEMOS emphasized the importance of rebuilding trust and fostering cooperation, particularly in addressing common challenges such as insecurity, terrorism, and trade barriers. It called on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to respond in kind by embracing dialogue and reaffirming their commitment to regional solidarity.
The Accra-based civil society network also stressed that restoring ties and ensuring the free movement of people and goods is key to promoting peace and sustainable development across West Africa.
