The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has congratulated Ghana for conducting peaceful and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024.
Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, lauded the exemplary conduct of stakeholders, candidates, and political leaders who prioritized peace throughout the electoral process. According to Simão, Ghana’s successful elections represent a significant step in reinforcing its democratic credentials as a model for the continent.
The UN praised the gracious concession by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who called for unity behind President-elect John Dramani Mahama. This act, Simão noted, underscores the maturity of Ghana’s political landscape.
Reaffirming its partnership with regional bodies, the UN expressed its continued support for Ghana’s aspirations toward democratic consolidation and prosperity.
John Dramani Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was officially declared the winner of the elections by Jean Mensa, Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, on Monday evening.
