The United Nations Refugee Agency – UNHCR has called for a more concerted effort from the international community to save lives of refugees en route towards the Mediterranean.
The Agency in a 2021 strategic action plan Wednesday also called for more funding to address the situation.
UNHCR further expressed concern over the escalating conflicts and displacements in the Sahel, the new displacements in the East and horn of Africa.
The refugee agency said it is worried about the increased sea arrivals to the Canary Islands which has resulted in over 1,000 deaths.
While offering safe and viable alternatives to the dangerous journeys blemished by abuse and deaths – the agency is seeking over 100 Million US dollar to enhance protection of refugees in African countries en route to the Mediterranean.
