The UN Security council has condemned attacks against civilians in the Sahel and West Africa
The United Nations (UN) body responsible for maintaining international peace and security says the success of the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa requires, among other things, the strengthening of “good governance ”and the facilitation of“ socio-economic development ”.
The Security Council encouraged further national and regional efforts to counter those threats, as it welcomed efforts by countries in the region, as well as the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to tackle security challenges amid a grim humanitarian situation made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It reaffirmed the need to address underlying conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, emphasized women’s participation in maintaining peace and stability, and encouraged UNOWAS to integrate information on the impact of climate change and natural hazards in its activities.
