Togo’s academic community gathered Thursday at the University of Lomé to discuss the African Union’s recent designation of slavery and colonization as crimes against humanity. The focus was on the enduring impact of these atrocities on Africans.

The AU’s resolution, adopted two months ago, recognizes the genocide and systemic violations committed against people of African descent. Notably, the resolution was championed by the Togolese government.

The conference drew scholars, students, and diplomats who explored the historical and modern implications of colonization. Participants also examined pathways to justice and healing.

The event underscored a growing movement to confront colonial legacies and demand global accountability.
