Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, citing prolonged political unrest and recent security threats.
The decision, announced in a televised address, temporarily suspends Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.
The move follows escalating tensions between Fubara and his former political mentor, Nyesom Wike, as well as an armed attack on an oil pipeline in the region.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas has been appointed to oversee the state’s administration during the emergency period.
