A team of experts from the African Union (AU) has arrived in Sierra Leone to assess the country’s preparedness for its participation in the sixth Formed Police Unit (FPU-6) peacekeeping mission.
The team’s visit is part of the evaluation process ahead of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) deployment to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
On Monday, November 12, 2024, the AU team paid a courtesy visit to Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, marking the beginning of the assessment process.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Lithakong Ntpaba, the leader of the AU assessment team, outlined the evaluation process during the meeting with IGP Sellu.
He also explained that the assessment would be conducted in two phases, focusing on both individual qualifications and the overall readiness of the FPU unit for deployment.
He added that the second phase would assess the operational readiness of the entire FPU unit, ensuring they are prepared to perform effectively in the mission area.
