Health unions in Senegal have declared a strike to show solidarity after the arrest of four midwives accused of being complicit in the death of a patient during childbirth in a hospital in the northern part of the country.

The withdrawal of services which took place on Thursday was dubbed "maternities without a midwife" and was supported largely by the Single Union of Health and Social Action Workers.
