The Manso enclave in the Ashanti region of Ghana is noted for Gold mining. However, another extractive activity has crept into area with adverse effects; Sand winning. The indiscriminate venture which has become popular among residents and foreigners, many of them Chinese nationals is gradually destroying the environment, replacing farm lands and leaving indigenes worse off.
In the following report, Eugene Osei-Tutu with WADR partner station Focus FM in the Ashanti region investigates risks of sand mining to human settlements and factors fuelling the menace.
