President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria is expected to address the nation later today to mark June 12 – Democracy Day.
On this day in 1993, some 14 million Nigerians went to the polls to elect a new president to end a decade of military dictatorship.
The euphoria was however short-lived because the results of the election were never released.
June 12 has since been regarded as a national day for Nigerians to appreciate the country’s journey and transition from military to civilian administration.
However, this year’s event few weeks after Tinubu’s one year in office, has met mixed reactions among the population based on the current socio-economic and political challenges.
Adeniyi Kunu, a public affairs analyst says on this day, Nigerians more than ever before need to be reminded about the importance of good leadership.
