Nigeria’s Federal Government has released over 4,000 prisoners jailed for minor offences, aiming to ease overcrowding in correctional facilities.
Minister of the Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the move at a ministerial briefing, revealing that it has saved the government ₦1 billion (about $650,000) in feeding expenses.
Authorities say this initiative is part of broader prison reforms to improve justice system efficiency and focus resources on more serious offenders.
