The Government of Niger is considering a partnership with Chad for the export of its crude oil into the International Market.
At the Council of Ministers on Monday, June 24, 2024, Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine announced a communication about this option. This is mainly part of the marketing of Nigerien oil. To make this idea a reality, the Nigerien government has set up a technical committee to reactivate the work leading to the achievement of this objective.
As a reminder, Niger and Chad had already signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding within the framework of the use of the Chad Pipeline, on September 17, 2012. The said agreement was approved on July 1, 2014, by the Chadian National Assembly and promulgated on July 21, 2014.
It is said that the legal framework for collaboration between the two countries for the transport of oil had already been drawn up. Since the commissioning of the Benin–Niger Pipeline, only one boat has been able to load Nigerien crude oil in Benin.
In the meantime, the crisis between Niger and Benin has grown with the arrest and trial of Nigerien citizens, including the deputy director of Wapco-Niger.
