Amnesty International has raised alarm over human rights abuses in Niger since the July 2023 coup, citing arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and press restrictions.
The report highlights the detention of former President Mohamed Bazoum, his wife, seven ex-ministers, journalists, and activists. It also notes the suspension of political parties and the dissolution of the Press House in January 2024.
Marceau Sivieude, Amnesty’s interim regional director for West and Central Africa, condemned the worsening rights situation.
Usmane Diallo, a senior Sahel researcher, provides further analysis.
