Zambia inaugurates Hakainde Hichilema as new president

Hakainde Hichilema Zambia’s president elect  today took the oath of office after his victory in the August 12 presidential poll.

Hichilema was one among the 14 candidates in the race. He however emerged winner after securing more than 2.8 million votes defeating the outgoing President Edgar Lungu. 

The veteran opposition politician made six bids for the presidency before finally landing the top job in a landslide.

Hichilema, 59, has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with Lungu's running of Zambia's economy and what he called a "brutal regime."
