Thursday, 22nd July 2021 marks 27 years since former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh ousted Sir Dr Kairaba Jawara, the first democratically elected president of the country, through a coup d'état that was widely seen as bloodless.

27 years on, the perceived revolutionary leader of the country who initially gained support from the citizens winning 4 elections has been accused of gross human rights violations including torture, rape and murder.

The former president left power following his defeat in the 2016 presidential election by current president Adama Barrow.

As the Gambia reforms its democratic institutions under the leadership of President Barrow almost 5 years since Jammeh left power; WADR reflect on the former president’s stay in office, his policies and what’s in for the “New Gambia” with Sheihk Mati Jaw, the director, Centre for Research and policy development in The Gambia and Political Science Lecturer at The Gambia
