US embassy to engage Liberian govt over new petroleum law

The United States Embassy near Monrovia says it will speak to Liberian officials about the removal of the 5% percent equity clause from the petroleum law of the country.

The clause sets aside a 5 percent equity right for Liberians.

Recently, a group of Liberians under the banner, Coalition for the Restoration of Liberian Equity, said the law was amended to concentrate this equity right in the hands of a few Liberian businesses.

The group has hailed the U.S. government’s comments on the law and says it will continue its advocacy until this clause is reinstated and the right of Liberians to petroleum wealth protected.

Head of the advocacy group is Ambulah Abutumaga Mamey.
