Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in today as Namibia’s first female president, marking a historic transition on the country’s 35th Independence anniversary.
The 72-year-old leader, known as NNN, has pledged to diversify the economy and tackle unemployment. Her SWAPO party, which has ruled Namibia for over three decades, secured 58% of the vote in the November elections.
Nandi-Ndaitwah joins a growing list of female African presidents, including Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Malawi’s Joyce Banda, and Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan—all of whom attended her inauguration in Windhoek.
