Banks in Mali have launched a three-day renewable strike starting Thursday to demand the release of two imprisoned Ecobank staff members.

The protest, led by the National Union of Banks and Financial Institutions, comes after failed negotiations with the government.

The two employees have been in detention since March, sparking outrage within the financial sector.

Union leaders say the strike may be extended if authorities fail to respond to their demands.
