Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio is pushing for a permanent African seat on the United Nations Security Council. In a video message commemorating 80 years of the UN Charter, President Bio emphasized the urgent need for reforms to correct what he calls “historical imbalances.”
Now serving as Chairman of ECOWAS, Maada Bio argued that Africa deserves full representation in both permanent and non-permanent categories of the Council, given the continent’s contributions to global peace and development.
He stressed that the UN must evolve to reflect current global realities, insisting that the exclusion of Africa from top decision-making bodies undermines the spirit of the Charter itself.
His call echoes growing demands from African leaders and civil society for more inclusive global governance and equitable participation in shaping international policies.
