Liberian President George Weah on Monday declared his ambition for a second term in office as the October 10 election draws nearer.

Weah made the announcement during his state of the nation address in Monrovia amid criticism of the government’s failure to control inflation and food shortages.

The Liberian leader said he will soon ask the population to renew the mandate given to him six years ago.

President Weah, 56, came to power in 2018 after winning an October 2017 election.

The day before his annual speech, hundreds of Liberians had demonstrated his state of the nation address in Monrovia amid criticism of the government’s failure to control inflation and food shortages.

The day before his annual speech, hundreds of Liberians had demonstrated peacefully to denounce Weah’s incompetence and indifference to the plight of the people.

Fighting corruption had been one of Weah’s major campaign promises, but Graft remains endemic, with Transparency International ranking Liberia 136th of 180 countries in its 2021 corruption perceptions index.
