At least one person was killed on Thursday following the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) at Bougoum, a village near Niamey, capital of Niger Republic.

The installation of IEDs is one of the means that terrorist groups are increasingly using in this area leading to the Burkinabe border.

According to the information gathered, it was a Toyota vehicle that jumped on an improvised explosive device (IED) on the asphalt road leading towards the Burkinabe border.

The village of Bougoum is located not far from the department of Torodi (southwest), where jihadist attacks with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are becoming more and more frequent.

Since 2017, western Niger has been regularly targeted by assaults by Islamist groups, despite the massive deployment of national anti-jihadist armed forces and the state of emergency in force.

On March 6, 2022, five Nigerien soldiers were killed in the explosion of an artisanal mine in Torodi.
