Benin celebrates 59 years of independence today Thursday 1st August 2019. The mood in the country however remains reserved, as many citizens express disappointment with the current political climate.
Benin has faced the biggest governance crisis since becoming a democracy in 1990. It could be recalled that ahead of the April 28th elections, the Talon government excluded the major opposition from participating. The government’s subsequent suppression of opposition protests in May in Cotonou and June in Thiarou left activists in prison and citizens fearful for the country’s democracy.
