President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau has ordered the partial closure of the country’s border with Senegal in response to a deadly clash between two Muslim communities earlier this week. The violence erupted in the town of Medina Gounass, located in southern Senegal, resulting in one death and 20 injuries.
The two communities have a history of conflict over control of the local main mosque, with tensions frequently escalating into violence. President Embalo stated that the closure aims to prevent further escalation, particularly as one community had called for reinforcements from Bissau.
Medina Gounass, situated just a few kilometers from Guinea-Bissau, is known for hosting an annual 10-day pilgrimage attended by thousands of Muslims. The 300-kilometer border shared by Senegal and Guinea-Bissau remains a significant point of concern.
The president’s decision underscores the need for stability and security in the region amidst ongoing tensions.
