The legal or institutional framework under which sand winning takes place in Ghana is defined by several laws including the Minerals and Mining Act 475, the sand winning and Stone Quarrying Bye-Laws and Environmental Assessment Regulations.
Four main organizations; the Minerals Commission, the Mines Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and the District Assemblies are tasked with the enforcement and monitoring of these laws at various levels of governance.
In the following report, Eugene Osei-Tutu with WADR partner station Focus FM in the Ashanti region of Ghana, examines the roles played by these organizations in the Manso Adubia district of his region.
