Ghana reportedly owes American companies nearly $251 million, sparking concerns from U.S. Senator James E. Risch, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The senator has called on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to use America’s influence within the IMF to push Ghana toward repaying its debts to companies such as Twin City Energy, Kosmos Energy, and Zipline.
Senator Risch criticized the IMF’s $3 billion Extended Credit Facility for Ghana, arguing it overlooks these outstanding debts and risks setting a harmful precedent for global lending practices.
He warned that the financial burden on these U.S. firms threatens their operations in Ghana and could strain future bilateral relations.
