Ghana will pilot a Pregnancy Registry in early 2026 to enhance the monitoring of vaccine safety among pregnant women and their babies.
The initiative forms part of the Maternal Immunisation Safety Monitoring Programme, which seeks to identify and track any adverse reactions linked to vaccines administered during pregnancy.
Spearheaded by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the pilot will be carried out by the Dodowa and Kintampo Health Research Centres.
Pregnant women who receive vaccines at health facilities within these centres’ catchment areas will be closely monitored during and after pregnancy.
At a stakeholder engagement in Accra, Dr. Edwin Nkansah, Director of Vaccines, Vigilance, and Clinical Trials at the FDA, said the project aims to build a reliable system for evaluating the safety of vaccines in pregnancy.
