Ghana’s parliament will start virtual sittings today as the cases of coronavirus in the country continue to surge.
The country which has over 3,000 active cases of COVID-19 has in recent times taken strict measures to curb the spread of the virus, including arresting hundreds, not complying with the mandatory wearing of face masks.
With reports that some parliamentarians and parliamentary staff have tested positive for the virus, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared that henceforth, only one-third of the house membership will be allowed in the chamber.
According to the speaker, the remaining legislators will follow and make contributions virtually.
Parliament was also fumigated during the weekend and proceedings will take place from the tent structure put up for President Akufo-Addo’s inauguration, which is more spacious and will allow for social distancing.
