The Ghanaian government has announced a scaled-back Independence Day celebration on March 6, in response to rising costs.
Instead of the usual large-scale event at Independence Square, the ceremony will be held at the Jubilee House, with fewer guests, including chiefs, religious leaders, and school representatives. This marks a pause in the tradition of rotating celebrations among different regions. The 2023 event cost GH¢15 million ($970,873), a figure the government deems unaffordable this year.
