Former Gambian soldier Michael Sang Correa has been found guilty on six counts of torture and conspiracy to commit torture by a U.S. court in Denver. The verdict marks a historic moment in the pursuit of justice for victims of the Yahya Jammeh regime.

Correa, a former member of the notorious Junglers unit, was convicted for his role in the brutal treatment of suspected opponents of Jammeh’s rule two decades ago. Evidence presented included audio recordings and photographic documentation, alongside gripping witness testimonies.

The trial drew attention from human rights advocates and victims’ families, many of whom were present at the courthouse to witness the outcome.

Rights defenders hailed the verdict as a powerful message of accountability, with ANKANWI’s Yusuf Taylor reporting on the emotional reactions from victims’ relatives.
