Gambia: parliamentary rights committee seeks police and prison service reforms

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters has called for fast-track trials for prisoners who have been detained for up to one year

The committee also called for prisoners who are remanded for more than fourteen years should have their cases reviewed and concluded within six months

It says detention facilities should be fit for purpose, as per domestic and international rules and standards.

The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters, in the execution of their oversight mandate, embarked on a tour to examine the conditions of detention centers and Prisons in the country.

Suwaibou Touray, Deputy Chair of the committee tells WADR more about the findings.
