Residents of  Latrikunda Sabiji in The Gambia have called on the government to swiftly intervene and resolve the acute water problem they have been facing for many years now.

Residents told local media that there has literally not been any drop of water from the government's taps since August 2021, and prior to that, they were only supplied water between 3am and 5am, a situation they said has been so for 21 years.

They said both day and night, the people of Latrikunda Sabiji, predominantly women, can be seen struggling to get water from privately owned boreholes.

In many occasions, these women trek long distances with gallons on their heads in search of water.

It is also reported that some people spend as much as 300 Dallasis on daily basis in buying water from wheel barrow pushers.

The residents said although they gave been lodging complaints at Nawec, the office in charge of water supply to the area, but all they keep getting have been promises.

However, the spokesman of Nawec, Pierre Sylva said although the last few months have been challenging but it is not true that the water problem in the area has lingered for 21 years as alleged.
